Advancing Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) Practices with Smallholder Communities for Effective Climate Work

In this session, participants explored the practical implementation of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) in smallholder and forest communities. Chileshe Chilangwa and Marcio Halla shared grounded experiences from Mafisa and Forest Trends, emphasizing how effective FPIC processes strengthen community ownership, legitimacy, and long-term project success. Juan Robalino presented a 10-step FPIC framework developed by Landesa in consultation with CASH members, offering a structured approach to embedding FPIC in climate and carbon initiatives. The session enabled a rich, peer-driven discussion on strengthening community engagement and aligning with best practices for responsible project design and implementation.
